I worry that this blog could easily become a list of who’s died lately, and I don’t want that. On the other hand, that mindset made me listen to Chris Gaines instead of Sinéad O’Connor.
What I knew
“I’m a loner, Dottie. A rebel.”
Plus Pee-wee Herman’s whole thing, just in general. I watched a lot of Pee-wee’s Playhouse as a kid because it was on before wrestling. See also: Garfield and Friends and Muppet Babies. And Sharky & George (“the crimebusters of the sea”) once we could only get wrestling on Canadian channels.
What I know
I’m having a hard time coming up with much to say since this was pretty much exactly what I was expecting. Lots of Pee-wee craziness, a handful of cameos, minimal story. Of course, nobody’s watching for the story.
As far as the craziness goes, I prefer Playhouse for its concentrated weirdness. As a kid, it made more sense to me that this wacky guy would be one part of a whole wacky world. Pee-wee in the real world would just be annoying, right? I… maybe didn’t have the best imagination as a kid. Or now.
Really, the best thing about this movie is how wholesome and heartwarming it is. He’s a weirdo, but he’s a weirdo who is generally happy, kind to everyone who’s not a bully, and well-liked.
That said, having some childhood nostalgia for the film would help. But Big Adventure didn’t need it as much as my next pick (he said teasingly, to his audience of zero).
