Actually Never

i don't know, i just haven't, okay

Moon

The movie poster for Moon. All black, apart from some concentric black and white circles with Sam Rockwell in a spacesuit standing in front of them. Tagline: "250,000 miles from home, the hardest thing to face... is yourself."

As you might have noticed from my picks here recently, I’ve been staying pretty far away from anything that isn’t funny or light. I attribute this to basically everything happening in the world. Since my last post, I’ve watched Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe, The Sound of 007, and The Greatest Night in Pop, documentaries about Canadian kids’ show icon Mr. Dressup, James Bond themes, and the making of We Are the World, respectively.

One time in Grade 8, we held a mock election for Prime Minister. For some reason, the candidates had to pretend to be Canadian celebrities. One kid picked Mr. Dressup. The teachers said no, because that was a TV character. The kid told the teachers that Mr. Dressup’s real name was Bill Dressup and they believed him or at least went along with it and he was allowed to run. Sadly, Bill Dressup wasn’t elected. Probably because I worked on his campaign team.

The only other candidate I remember was a girl from the other Grade 8 class who ran as Ocean Hellman who was in the TV show Danger Bay and whose last name I just had to look up. Her campaign slogan was “get in motion, vote for Ocean” and why do I remember that 35 years later? She didn’t win either but we cannot deny the stickiness of that slogan.

None of which is what I came here to talk about but I have no regrets.

I kicked off last night by watching Moonfall which is an excellent movie about the moon falling onto the Earth. It’s incredibly stupid in a way that I highly recommend.

I thought it would make a perfect How Did This Get Made? movie and then remembered Jason Mantzoukas chanting “fuck the moon” and realized that not only did they cover it, I’d listened to the episode twice. (Three times as of this morning.)

For a followup, I figured I should watch an actual real movie since it’s been a while. I scrolled through my to-watch list and settled on Moon, not even making the Moon/Moonfall connection until the movie began.

What I knew

I knew Sam Rockwell was in it, as was the moon. And that cover art was memorable. Striking, even.

What I know

Hey it’s Matt Berry! That wouldn’t have meant anything to me in 2009 when this movie came out. Now it means Jackie Daytona, Human Bartender.

Hey it’s (the voice of) Kevin Spacey! That’s not so good but at least you don’t have to look at him.

A fine performance by Sam Rockwell. Very much a one- man show. It must be hard to act with so little to play off of. Took me a while to figure out what was happening which I suppose is the point since it took the main character a while too. Characters? Sam Rockwells? Sams Rockwell?

About Me

James. 49. Canadian. He/him. Here for everything I’ve missed.

There’s a musician with my name. I’m not him. He’s probably seen The Godfather.
